Sorry it's been so long since the last episode, but over the summer Mary Ellen was very busy taking part in lots of fun activites. 

In this episode Mary Ellen shares some of the fun things she did over her summer break like travelling to Indiana to visit great grandparents, seeing lots of movies, making arts and crafts, having sleepovers with friends and playing outside.

  1. Vera Bradley was founded by Patricia Miller and Barbara Bradley
  2. The two friends got the idea for their company while noticing the primarily masuline luggage at the airport.
  3. The company was started shortly after in 1982 and in addition to luggage Vera Bradley offers a full line of handbags, gifts and accessories.
  4. New colors and patterns come out each season, with older colors retireing every 18-36 months.
  5. Once a year, usually in May, Vera Bradley has a large outlet sell at their headquarters in Fort Wayne Indiana.  (see website for details)

The History of Mothers Day in America
  1. The ancient Greeks honored the mother of the gods Rhea, with a celebration every Spring.
  2. In England the early Christians celebrated all mothers on the 4th Sunday during Lent called "Mothering Sunday".
  3. Julia Howe tried to get a holiday for Mothers started in 1872
  4. After losing her mother at age 41, Anna Jarvis wanted to prevent others for taking their mothers for granted and began what we now now as Mothers Day in 1907.
  5. The holiday was made official in 1914 by US President Woodrow Wilson who declared the second Sunday of May as Mothers Day.
  6. While many countries around the world have days to recognize mothers, the countries of Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia and Belgium all celbrate Mothers on the same day as the United States!

  1. It is said that Oprah's given name was "Orpah" from the book of Ruth. Some say it was mispelled on the birth certificate, others it was always mis-pronounced and just stuck.
  2. Her Grandmother taught her to read at a very young age
  3. She recived a full scholarship to Tennessee State University
  4. Started her TV career as a news anchor at age 19 and later co-hosted "People are Talking"
  5. The Oprah Winfrey Show started in 1986.  It was originally a low rated show of a different name but Oprah boosted the ratings when she took it over.
  6. Oprah helped Dr. Phil get his start in TV
  7. Oprah has starred in several movies
  8. Oprah publishes 2 magazines and had co-authered 5 books
  9. With a net worth of over $1.4 Billion, Oprah is one of the first African American Female Billionares
  10. In 1998 Oprah started the charity "Oprah's Angel Network"

About the Company:
American Girl started with a line of historical character dolls in 1986.  These dolls each represent a different time period of American History and have stories that tell how a girl of that time period would have grown up.  The company later expanded into Magazines, Books, Stores as well as new doll characters.

American Girl Place:
